How to Wear a Maxi Dress in the Fall: 3 Ways to Style Dresses for the Cold
Posted by BONNIE WISCOMBE
Is there a more anticipated seasonal transition than summer to fall? The cooler months bring the excitement of pumpkin-flavored everything, fun holidays and, of course, cute and simple fall outfits! One of the style questions we get asked most often is regarding maxi dress outfits and specifically different ways to transition them to the fall and winter seasons. Check out the following style tips and you just might find the perfect way to keep wearing your favorite, breezy maxi dress well past the changing of seasons.
Summer dresses (this is the dress pictured above) have so much going for them: they're a great way to stay cool, they're easy to find in a pretty floral print and they pair perfectly with summer staples like flat sandals and even a bathing suit! But fall weather will require a different wardrobe staple or two to keep you warm.
Denim Jacket
Nothing quite says "casual wear" like a jean jacket. But we especially love pairing them with dresses because of the contrast between fancy and relaxed. You can create so many different looks with this combo and denim jackets can be surprisingly warm layering pieces. Plus its neutral color means it goes with just about any summer maxi dress in your closet. Cute straw totes would be go great with this look!
Black Leather Jacket
The best way to imbue a bit of edgy style into your summer wardrobe is throwing a moto jacket over a woven or knit maxi dress and adding a pair of ankle boots. Again, the contrast between feminine and masculine works really well here and becomes a new way to pull off fall dresses that might be a bit unexpected. You might also hear this piece referred to as a biker jacket and we recommend adding a bit of trendy jewelry to finish off the look. This styling is especially fun with a maxi gown; try it for your next special event!
Chunky Sweater
Is there another piece of outerwear that says "fall" better than a warm, oversized sweater? This is an outer layer that works equally well for a strappy, short sleeve or strapless maxi dress. You can opt for the more common cardigan with an open front or pick up some cozy sweaters in a pullover style. Wearing the latter style over fall maxi dresses makes them look like a maxi skirt and is a simple way to get more wear out of any dress in your closet! Throw on a pair of boots and a tote bag and you may have found the best maxi style for fall. We also really love a simple, black cardigan like the Onyx cardigan pictured above.
You really can't go wrong with a pretty maxi skirt and the righr outerwear!
